Prices – Environmental sample processing

We operate a flexible pricing system that takes into account the variability of soil type, size of sample and the quantity of flot and residue, which can affect processing time.  Sorting and analysis of flots and residues are priced according to individual requirements.  Please contact us for more details.

Terms and Conditions for Flotation of Soil Samples

On collection of your soil samples we will require you to provide a comprehensive list of all samples for which a receipt will be given.

Any incorrectly labelled samples will not be processed until we have contacted you to try and rectify the problem.

Soil samples can vary considerably due to soil type and quantity of residue/flot/finds, however we can provide you with an initial approximate estimate of the time and cost of processing your samples.  Once we have washed several of your samples we will have a clearer idea of how the processing is going to proceed and will be able to provide you with a more accurate estimate.

With larger soil samples we appreciate that one sample may be divided into several different bags.  We will therefore process all bags with the same number from the same context as ONE sample unless otherwise specified by the client.

With samples which have a very large amount of heavy, stony residue it may not always be possible to fit the whole of one sample into the tank in one wash.  In such cases we will divide the sample and treat it as two individual samples.  This will ensure the effective retrieval of the maximum amount of flot, as with larger residues charcoal is trapped within the residue and it becomes difficult and time consuming to extract it especially if, as in a lot of cases, the charcoal is water-logged and reluctant to float.

If charcoal is very water-logged we recommend that samples be washed, dried out and re-floated.  We have found this to be an extremely efficient way of maximising charcoal retrieval.  If we feel your samples would benefit from this process we will contact you to discuss the matter further.

During the flotation process we will separate out any finds in the residues and dry and bag them separately, unless otherwise specified by the client.

The flotation tank and equipment is completely emptied and cleaned before processing the soil from each new site to avoid cross-contamination.  There is a £10 charge for emtying the tank.  The tank also has to be emptied after washing approximately fifteen 10 litre soil samples, but this can vary according to the amount of residue and soil in the samples.

Our prices are inclusive of heat-assisted drying time, sorting, bagging and labelling of flots, residues and finds.

Please note that we have limited facility for long-term storage.  Storage of your samples for more than 28 days may incur an extra charge.

If payment is not received one calendar month from receipt of the invoice we reserve the right to charge interest on the amount owing.
